The Creator Economy Is Booming in India - Here's How We're Riding the Wave

India's creator economy is becoming mainstream, and Rolcano is building a creator-first path into the next phase of entertainment.

India's creator economy isn't a niche anymore, it's mainstream.

Some years - or we can say decades - ago, when YouTube was launched, only 40 videos were published initially on the platform, and somehow the founders got anxious. But somewhere they had a belief about their craft and about what they were doing. Look at it now - after a decade, the creator economy is not a niche anymore, it's mainstream. People are more willing to become a creator than to become a doctor, an engineer, or anything else. The wave is increasing day by day, and at Rolcano, we're riding that wave with a vision.

What's actually changed

The change happened right from when Jio launched free internet in India. After that, data kept getting cheaper day by day, and people started using smartphones more than ever. Then TikTok came, and people started creating and consuming short-form content - the boom around content creation increased massively. The picture is very clear now: if you are a creator, you have an immense advantage, because everyone has started making content, no matter which profession they're in - even a 10-year-old kid.

Rise of individual creators as legitimate businesses (not just influencers)

The rise of the individual creator has grown at the speed of light, and it's still growing with immense momentum. Take stand-up comedians as an example - in the past, becoming a stand-up comedian meant limiting yourself to TV shows. Now they're creating their own wealth and giving tough competition to any businessman. And the funniest part is, they're doing what they truly love, using the leverage of content to make their live shows houseful and tour worldwide - all because of the power of content creation.

Why India specifically

Most people will have the question - why are we so focused on India? And that's a totally fair thing to wonder. But before that question settles in your mind, look around you carefully at what people are doing. You can even look at your own kids and see if they eat without watching content on their phone. Yes - this isn't happening only in India, but it's happening majorly in India, because we love entertainment, and India has vast diversity where choices change over very short distances - and with that, content consumption also increases.

Platforms like Instagram and YouTube are also majorly focusing on India, because they too understood that India is a huge market to tap into for entertainment addiction. Indian people love making reels on Instagram and love making videos and Shorts on YouTube.

The gap between the creator economy and OTT

Everything looks very shiny when we look at the content creation industry, but as they say, every shiny thing has something dark behind it - and it's the same with content creation. The gap is real, because as the content creation market grows, people's hopes of becoming a content creator and becoming famous also grow - and it's not as easy as it looks, because the market is very crowded on YouTube, and existing OTT platforms only onboard already-famous personalities. The content creators who aren't famous yet, but whose craft is genuinely good, are still struggling to find their space in this industry. That's the real gap - apart from the earnings gap as well. At Rolcano, we're trying to fill that gap, and we believe this is the real opportunity for every content creator who wants to thrive - right from the very beginning, as long as their craft is good.

How we're capturing this - our collaboration approach

As we've already said, we're more of a helping hand for creators than a business entity. We believe that if we collaborate with creators the right way, it's a win-win situation - for both the creators and for us.

India's creator economy is projected to grow from roughly USD 15.03 billion in 2026 to over USD 61.87 billion by 2033, at a 22.4% CAGR - one of the fastest-growing segments in the country's digital economy. Coherent Market Insights.

India is emerging as a particularly significant creator hub, with the government citing 2-2.5 million active digital creators, while YouTube reported that more than 100 million Indian channels uploaded content in the preceding year, with over 15,000 channels crossing one million subscribers. Who we're partnering with and why

Currently, we're focusing majorly on comedians. The reason is very clear - stand-up comedians are thriving more than most other types of content creators, and yet they still don't have their own platform to showcase their craft from the very beginning. But this is only the starting point - we're equally happy to onboard every form of content creator, as long as their craft is genuinely good. Yes, the bar is high, and that's intentional - we don't want to gather noise at Rolcano. That's why we've been clear about our niche since day one.

Where this is headed

Our vision is simple and clear - we want to take this industry to a level that doesn't exist anywhere right now, over the next 2-3 years. Our approach is clear: we want to take every creator on this journey with us, on our ship.

Specifically in India, the growth is already projected, and we're executing at rapid speed. The journey comes with a lot of struggle, but we're sticking to it.
